• It’s the maritime climate that makes our place unique, but it’s our folk and our community that make it special.

  • Our Region

The Southern Ocean has a dramatic influence on our family vineyard and allows us to make elegant, true, cool climate wines. Hugging the shoreline between the coastal towns of Kingston and Robe on South Australia’s Limestone Coast, Mount Benson is a truly unique place.

  • It experiences cold, wet winters followed by extended growing seasons and year-round southerly winds whistling in from the coast. Add to that undulating slopes of sandy loam over sedimentary limestone soils, and you have the perfect conditions for healthy and happy vines capable of producing world-class, crisp, bright and elegant cool climate wines.

  • Our Folk

Our family has strong ties to the Limestone Coast, with many fond holiday memories and farming roots that span multiple generations. So, when the opportunity arose for us to purchase Norfolk Rise back in 2021, it seemed like a natural progression, albeit an exciting one. Since then, it’s been all hands on deck, with two generations of the McBride family pitching in.

  • But it’s not just our family who have made this endeavour possible. It’s the support of a wonderful team and extended community, including many long-time folk such as our vineyard manager George. He's been with the business since it began (more than 20 years ago) and it’s safe to say he knows our vineyard inside and out.

  • Our Community

Though our winemaking philosophy is simple—to make great wines that reflect and represent what this region is capable of, we also know that it’s about a lot more. Our community really is central to everything we do and have done in this region for many years.

  • We believe that a strong community is the key to a happy and fulfilling family life and to the success of our region and its industry—from viticulture to agriculture, tourism and everything in-between. We are proud to live, work and play in a community that is supportive of one another and works together for the greater good of our environment, industry and people.

  • Being a country community, we’re quite fond of our sport too. And, so as not to play favourites (given that Mount Benson doesn’t have its own clubs), we currently sponsor netball and football teams from Kingston and Robe—Mt Benson sits in the middle!

  • Our Estate

Our Mount Benson Estate comprises over 182 hectares, with 140 planted to vineyard. The site gets its name from the imposing Norfolk Pines that line the boulevard running through the centre of the vineyard and were specifically chosen to withstand the Southern Ocean winds that roll in off the coast.

  • The state-of-the-art on-site winery was built in 1999-2000 under the estate’s previous ownership and was initially designed to process and hold large volumes of wines efficiently. These days we’re opting to process smaller premium parcels carefully. However, we still enjoy the flexibility afforded by such a well-functioning and generous space with its great tank and barrel storage.

  • Since purchasing the site, we have consciously made decisions and implemented measures to support our environmental goals and vision for a sustainable future. Most recently, we installed a 99.84KW solar system of 256 solar panels, which now powers around 75% of our day-to-day energy needs. We’ve also introduced sheep into our vineyard to reduce the need for herbicides and pesticides, whilst also providing additional organic nutrients back into our soils.
